Devon’s main town Exeter is a thriving university town boasting one of England’s loveliest cathedrals. Dating from the 12th to the 15th centuries Exeter Cathedral is renowned for its uninterrupted vaulted roof, which stretches for 100 meters (300 feet). In the serene cathedral close are shops and houses dating from the 15th century, with more fine old buildings on and around the high street. One of the most interesting is the Guildhall, built in 1330.The Recently gentrified Exeter Quay features restored 19th century canal side warehouses. Worth a visit, too, are the Priory of St Nicholas, which has Norman origins; the Underground Passages walk; and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery.
Exeter as well as having its own airport nearby has major road and rail links to the City.St David’s railway station is about 15 minutes walk or 5 minutes bus ride from the centre.
There are two junctions off the M5 motorway, one to each side of the City.
A Map on getting to the City by motorway
Parking in Exeter city centre is available in several short and long stay car parks. A park and ride scheme is operated, this works by drivers parking their vehicles on the city outskirts, either in the Sowton or Matford areas and then catching one of the regular buses from these parks to the centre. The parking is usually free, just the return bus fare is purchased.Once in the City centre, mini buses run at regular intervals. It is possible to get to almost any area you should wish to go via this system of transport. Another method is the City’s taxi service, these taxis are available from various taxi ranks around the centre or by telephone arrangement to the place you require. Taxis are also available at the bus and train stations and the airport.Links to travel web sites
